BRISTOL, R.I.-- Both UMass Dartmouth men’s & women’s swimming teams continued their respective strong starts to the 2018-19 campaign on Saturday afternoon, as the Corsairs posted a pair of top three team finishes at the Roger Williams Invitational.
UMass Dartmouth placed second among six teams competing on the men’s side, as junior David Adamski (Wilbraham, Mass.) was a winner in both the 200 (1:49.35) and 500 (5:05.00) yard freestyle while recording a fifth place finish in the 50 yard freestyle (24.02) for the Corsairs. Sophomore Justin Chung (Roslindale, Mass.) and freshman Luc Durand (Belmont, Mass.) added respective fourth place performances in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.05) and 100 yard butterfly (57.95) for UMass Dartmouth, which received a fifth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:18.66) from junior Stephen Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.).
The tandem of senior Anthony Toscano (Massapequa, N.Y.), junior Kyle MacKenzie (Londonderry, N.H.) and freshmen Nathan Motisi (Ellington, Conn.) and Eric Worden (Portland, Maine) posted a runner-up finish in the 200 yard freestyle medley relay (1:37.25), while the quartet of Durand, Barrett, MacKenzie and Adamski placed second in the 200 yard freestyle relay (3:29.82). Duran, Chung, Worden and Adamski also recorded a fourth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (1:46.67) for the Corsairs, who team score of 84 points was topped only by the host Hawks.
Junior Sarah Murphy (Braintree, Mass.) helped lead UMass Dartmouth to third place in a field of seven teams competing on the women’s side, as she notched a second place finish in the 200 yard individual medley (2:25.93). Freshman Maddie Kovach (Oxford, Conn.) added respective fourth and fifth place performances in the 200 yard individual medley (2:27.06) and 100 yard backstroke (1:06.78) for the Corsairs, while juniors Alissa Hall (Westboro, Mass.), Kayla Lovy (Londonderry, N.H.) and Abigail Wilson (Newburyport, Mass.), along with sophomore Tara Clark (Southgate, Mich.), combined for a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:53.75).
Kovach, Murphy, Wilson and junior Molly Harrington (Tewksbury, Mass.) each swam legs of the respective fourth place 200 yard medley (2:02.26) and 400 yard freestyle (4:07.25) relays for UMass Dartmouth, as Clark completed the tandem in the 200 medley while Clark swam the third leg of the 400 freestyle. Roger Williams also took top honors on the women’s side on the afternoon, as Regis topped the Corsairs by 19 points (71-52) for the runner-up spot in the competition.
Both UMass Dartmouth teams return to action next Saturday afternoon by heading to Babson Park, Mass. for a dual-meet with Babson that begins at 1:00 pm.
