Swimmers Perform Well at UMD Invitational

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's swimming teams turned in a strong performance at the annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational at the Tripp Athletic Center Pool Saturday. Assumption, Westfield State, Gordon and Bridgewater State also participated in the meet, at which no team scores were recorded.
Winners for the women included the 200 yard medley relay team of senior Kaitlyn Kewriga (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton HS), senior Kathleen Foley (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS), freshman Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) and freshman Maggie Conlon (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS), who finished first in 2:02.13. Cooper won the 50 yard breast stroke in 33.25 and the 50 yard butterfly in 28.72, Foley won the 100 yard breast stroke in 1:13. 71, and Conlon took the 100 yard individual medley in 1:06.73.
For the men, the 200 yard medley relay team of freshman Chris Dodge (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) junior Steve Szarek (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS), junior David Adams (Tyngsboro, MA/ Tyngsboro HS) and junior Andrew Haughey (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) finished first in 1:48.47. Freshman Jake Pesante (Wakefield, RI/South Kingston HS) took the 200 yard freestyle in 1:54.92 and the 100 yard freestyle in 51.90, Szarek won the 50 yard breaststroke in 29.59 and the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:06.16, junior Joe Krzystofik (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee HS) won the 100 yard butterfly in 1:00.17 and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:28.56, junior Craig Johnson (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) won the 50 yard freestyle in 22.63, Adams won the 50 yard butterfly in 25.74, freshman Matt Dean (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry HS) took the 100 yard individual medley in 1:02.94, and the 300 yard freestyle relay team of Dean, Dodge, Pesante and Haughey finished first in 3:26.24.
"I was extremely pleased with our swims today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "We had several men attain qualifying times for the upcoming ECAC Division III Championships, and the women are getting ready for the Little East Championships. Our relay team is starting to come together, and we are swimming faster than at this time last season. We hope to keep this momentum and quality of swimming throughout the season."
The Corsairs will return to action when they host Bentley next Saturday.
