Men's Tennis Picked to Successfully Defend LEC Title
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team has been picked to finish first in the annual Little East Conference pre-season poll.
The Corsairs, who have won the LEC post-season tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championships in two of the past three years, received five of the seven first place votes and 46 points.
Southern Maine was second, with 38 points and the other two first place votes. Bridgewater State was third with 32 points, UMass Boston fourth with 24 points, Western Connecticut State fifth with 20 points, Salem State sixth with 18 points and Rhode Island College seventh with 17 points.
"We have five of our top six players returning, we have five of our top six players back from last year and we added an exchange student from Grenoble, France who will be among our top three players, so we should be very strong," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Four of our five returning players made either first or second team All-Conference, and two of the doubles teams made All-Conference, and we also have the returning Player of the Year, (junior) Karsten Rathlev ((Winchester, MA/Winchester HS). Our only senior is one of our co-captains, Brian Lui ((Medfield, MA/Medfield HS). This team can be as good as they want to be, but they have to work at it, because we don't know what the other teams have. My feeling is that this is the best group I've had since I've been at UMass Dartmouth."
The Corsairs will open their season March 27th against Becker.
