Men's Tennis Rolls Over Johnson & Wales, 8-1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team swept all three doubles matches and defeated visiting Johnson & Wales, 8-1, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.
Five Corsairs won twice. Junior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) remained undefeated, downing junior James Adriano (Pawcatuk, CT/Stonington HS) at number one singles, 6-0, 6-0, and combining with senior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) to defeat Adriano and freshman Ian Huxel (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) at number one doubles, 8-4.
Junior Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) downed freshman Mars Wala (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket HS) at number two singles, 6-1, 6-0, and combined with junior Zach Engstrom (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) to defeat sophomore Robert Goggin (Tewksbury, MA/St. Mary's HS) at number two doubles, 8-1. Engstrom defeated freshman Jacob Wanner (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster HS) at number four singles, 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) downed Huzel at number three singles, 6-2, 6-2, and combined with junior Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) to down freshman Steve Dominguez (Meriden, CT/Wilcox Tech HS) and sophomore Taylor Coyne (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry HS) at number three doubles, 8-0.
"We were without three of our top six players, and I was very pleased with Ray Lawton at number three singles, Zach Engstrom at number four singles and Cody Zygmont at number five singles, who filled in," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We played well as a team. We are looking forward to our next three league matches, which will determine who wins the league, and how the teams are seeded for the tournament."
The Corsairs improved to 8-2 with the victory, while the Wildcats dropped to 5-5 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Southern Maine Saturday. Johnson & Wales will visit Emerson Saturday.
