NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team finished third in an eight-team field at the Stonehill Invitational last weekend.
The Corsairs finished with 11 points. The host Skyhawks were first with 21 points.
For the second year in a row, (senior) Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) finished first in the number one singles bracket, defeating Eric Ringstad of Stonehill in the finals, 6-3, 6-2. At number two, sophomore Patrick Lewis (Dorchester, MA/Dorchester HS) advanced to the consolation finals at number two singles, losing to Matt McLeod of Bridgewater State, 8-4. At number three, junior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) defeated Johnathyn Young of Post in the first round, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), (10-7) before falling to Philip Klados of Stonehill, 6-4, 2-6, (10-4). Senior Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) lost both of his matches at number four singles.
In doubles, sophomore Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) and freshman Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA/Westport HS) defeated James Diamentopoulos and Monaf Awwa of Salve Regina, 8-2, before dropping their next match to Tyler Smith and Lawrence Chan of Wheaton, 8-3.
"Considering the competition, the level of play and the other teams in the tournament, we did well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We are looking forward to another successful season in the Little East Conference."
The tournament completed non-traditional fall season action for the Corsairs.
