NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team was edged by visiting Springfield, 5-4 in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday.
At number one doubles, senior Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/New York City Tech) and junior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) lost to sophomore Kyle Mersereau (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick HS) and senior Ben Burnap (Westerly, RI/Westerly HS), 9-8 (7-5). At number two, sophomore Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/ Fairhaven HS)) and freshman Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA/Westport HS) lost to junior Joe Giannelli (Watertown, CT/Holy Cross HS) and sophomore Alex Orban (Milford, CT/Albertus Magnus), 8-5. At number three, sophomore Patrick Lewis (Dorchester, MA/Dorchester HS) and freshman Jon Reagan (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) defeated sophomore Cody Rodrigues (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) and senior Zac Goldstein (Shelton, CT/Shelton HS), 8-4.
In singles, Mersereau defeated Dugas at number one, 6-3, 6-1; Burnap defeated Bejtlich at number two, 6-3, 6-2; and Lewis downed Giannelli at number three, 6-4, 7-5. Orban defeated Chouinard at number four, 6-0, 6-3, Lawton downed Robinson at number five, 6-2, 6-3, and Reagan downed Rodrigues at number six, 7-5, 5-7, (12-10). The Corsairs were without senior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS), who was out with an injury.
"I was pleased with the play of Pat Lewis and Jon Reagan, who each won twice," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Both of them played well. Once again, we were without our number one player, which makes a difference in both singles and doubles."
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-3 with the loss, while Springfield improved to 7-6 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Rhode Island College next Tuesday. The Pride will visit Clark Saturday.
