BRIDGEWATER, MA- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's tennis team won five of the six singles matches and defeated host Bridgewater State, 7-2, in a Little East Conference match at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts Wednesday.
At number one singles, senior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) defeated Wes Esthimer, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/New York City Tech) defeated Matt McLeod at number two, 6-2, 6-1; junior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) downed Jesse Gotlib at number three, 6-2, 6-1; and sophomore Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) defeated Cody Farrell at number four, 6-3, 6-1. At number five, freshman Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA/Westport HS) defeated Sean Bleau, 6-3, 7-5, and freshman Jon Reagan (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) lost to Eric Johnson at number six, 6-2, 6-4.
Rathlev and Bejtlich defeated Gotlib and Bleau at number one doubles, 8-2. Dugas and Chouinard downed Johnson and Hung Huynh at number two, 8-5, and McLeod and Farrell defeated the Corsair duo of Lawton and freshman Malcolm Neville (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) at number three, 8-4.
"I was very pleased, we had four people with double wins," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We have one league match left, and, if we win, it will give us the number two seed for the conference tournament next week."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-3 and 4-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Bridgewater State dropped to 9-4 and 3-2 in the LEC with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State Saturday. The Bears will host UMass Boston Saturday.
