NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's tennis team earned its first Little East Conference victory of the season in decisive fashion, sweeping Salem State University 9-0 this afternoon.
The Corsairs (2-6) snapped a three-match losing streak and improved to 1-2 in the conference circuit, while the Vikings (0-7) remain winless at 0-2 in league action.
UMass Dartmouth raced out to an early 3-0 lead, winning each of the doubles competitions. The Corsairs' top-team of senior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel Chouinard (Westport, Mass.) defeated Sean Rose and Jake McKinnon, 8-2. Junior Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, Mass.) and sophomore Jake Jaskolka (Mattapoisett, Mass.) edged Salem State's No. 2 tandem in Conner Erickson and David Dluzneiski, 8-6. The hosts' completed the doubles sweep as junior Malcolm Neville (Foxboro, Mass.) and sophomore Andrew Burdick (North Dartmouth, Mass.) posted an 8-6 win over Kevin Lam and Luke Hodgkins.
UMass Dartmouth continued to apply the pressure in singles, winning each of the six matches in straight sets. Bejtlich earned his first win at top-flight singles, defeating his counterpart, Erickson, 6-1, 6-2. Lawton moved up to No. 2 to post a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Rose. Senior Jon Reagan (Franklin, Mass.) turned in a dominant performance at third-flight singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. Jaskolka, Neville, and sophomore Tony Xie (Beijing, China) captured their singles matches to seal the win for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, when the Corsairs host Bridgewater State University (2-6, 0-1 LEC) in a Little East Conference match.
