NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth won four singles matches to rally from a 2-1 deficit to defeat fifth-seeded Rhode Island College, 5-2, this afternoon in the first round of the 2014 Little East Men's Tennis Championship tournament.
The Corsairs (5-9) will advance to face top-seeded University of Southern Maine in the semifinal round on Thursday, May 1. The Anchormen completed their 2014 campaign with a 5-9 record.
Facing a 2-1 deficit after the doubles competition, UMass Dartmouth won each of its four single flights in straight sets to earn the victory. Sophomore Daniel Chouinard (Westport, Mass.) defeated his opponent at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3, while junior Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, Mass.) followed suit with a 6-4, 6-1 win at third-flight singles. Senior Jon Reagan (Franklin, Mass.) dispatched his opponent at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4, and junior Malcolm Neville (Foxboro, Mass.) clinched a berth in the semifinal round by cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
Rhode Island College used a fast start in doubles to gain the early 2-1 advantage. The Anchormen's top-flight duo of Alex Werchadlo and Troy Derrick earned a 9-6 decision over senior Matt Bejtlich and Chouinard. The second and third doubles both were decided in a tie-breaker. Sophomore Andrew Burdick (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Neville edged RIC's No. 3 team 7-3 in the tiebreaker for the 9-8 win.
