DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Eastern Nazarene College spoiled the debut of Karsten Rathlev as the head coach of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's tennis program this afternoon, defeating the Corsairs 9-0 at the UMD Tennis Courts.
The Lions (1-0) set the tone in the early stages of the match, sweeping the three doubles competitions. Freshman Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) and senior Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) posted an 8-4 win over the Corsairs' (0-1) top doubles team in junior Dan Chouinard (Westport, Mass.) and sophomore Cory Rafter (Franklin, Mass.). Senior Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) and junior Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) combined for an 8-2 decision over senior Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, Mass.) and junior Jake Jaskolka (Mattapoisett, Mass.). Junior Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and senior Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory over senior Malcolm Neville (Foxboro, Mass.) and junior Andrew Burdick (Rochester, Mass.) in third-flight action.
Chouinard nearly broke through for the hosts at top-flight singles, winning the opening set over Tolmachev. However, Tolmachev rebounded to win the second frame and super-tie-breaker 10-6 to capture the match. Eastern Nazarene won the remaining singles flights in straight set to seal its first win of the season.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action on March 6, when the Corsairs face Wheaton College (Mass.) in a non-conference match.
