DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth men's tennis squad dropped a 9-0 decision to visiting Roger Williams on Thursday in the Corsairs' 2016 spring home opener.
With the loss, UMass Dartmouth drops to 0-5 on the 2015-16 season. Roger Williams is now 4-2 and snaps a two-match skid.
Freshman Ian Patriarca (Springfield, Mass.) put up the tightest score of the day, falling at the No. 2 singles spot to Hawk senior Johan Schwartz (Orange, Conn.) 6-2, 6-2. Patriarca also made his debut at No. 1 Doubles, teaming with junior Corey Rafter (Franklin, Mass.) to drop 8-0 to Schwartz and partner Fred Clifford (Duxbury, Mass.). Clifford swept Rafter at the top singles flight, 6-2, 6-1.
Both the No. 2 and No. 3 Doubles duos for the Corsairs were able to take points away from the Hawks. Senior Andrew Burdick (Dartmouth, Mass.) and freshman Anthony Joseph (Fairhaven, Mass.) coupled at No. 2 against freshman Nick Spoor (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and senior Andrew Amarone (North Haven, Conn.) to drop 8-2. Senior Tony Xie (Beijing, China) and senior Summer Forest-Bulley (Turners Falls, Mass.) fell by the same score at the third flight to senior Eric Bott (Bethel, Conn.) and junior Matt Russo (Branford, Conn.).
Burdick was the only other Corsair to earn a game, taking a 6-1, 6-0 decision to RWU's Stratton Stilianos (Lynnfield, Mass.) at the No. 5 singles spot.
UMass Dartmouth will compete again in a week, hosting Johnson & Wales at 3:30 p.m. on March 31. Roger Williams will play next on Saturday, traveling to UMass Boston for a 2 p.m. start.
