Men's Tennis Rises to 2-1 in LEC Play with 8-1 Win over RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UMass Dartmouth men's team nearly swept Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon, winning the conference match by an 8-1 score. The Corsairs improve to 3-7 on the year after winning three of the last four matches and move to 2-1 in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen fall to 2-10 and remain winless in the conference play, sitting at 0-3.

The Corsairs sailed through the doubles pairings by sweeping all three match-ups on the afternoon. The combination of seniors Andrew Burdick (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Daniel Chouinard (Westport, Mass.) took down sophomores Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, R.I.) and Brett Taggart (North Kingstown, R.I.) 8-4 in top flight doubles. The second pairing of junior Corey Rafter (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Ian Patriarca (Springfield, Mass.) defeated the freshman pair of Alan Esposito (Clinton, Conn.) and Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, R.I.) 8-2. Finally, the duo of senior Summer Forest-Bulley (Turners Falls, Mass.) and freshman Anthony Joseph (Fairhaven, Mass.) turned aside both junior Cory Duquette (Warwick, R.I.) and freshman Chandler Scott (Ashaway, R.I.) by an 8-3 score.

No. 6 singles was the only blip on the Corsairs score sheet, as Gabardella edged out sophomore Zach Pavao (Somerset, Mass.) 0-6, 7-6(4), 10-4.

Chouinard downed Taggart 6-2, 6-0 in the top singles match-up. No. 2 went way of Rafter who beat Tiberi 7-5, 6-3, and in No. 4 singles went to the nearly the same score as Joseph defeated Scott 7-5, 6-1.

Patriarca defeated Esposito in No. 3 singles to the score of 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), and senior Tony Xie (Beijing, China) dispatched Duquette 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 in No. 5 singles .

UMass Dartmouth will return to action tomorrow when they travel to Milton, Mass. to take on the Curry Colonels.
