Western Connecticut Edges out Men's Tennis, 5-4

DANBURY, Conn. – UMass Dartmouth men's tennis went down to the wire against Western Connecticut on Saturday before narrowly falling 5-4 in Little East Conference action. UMass Dartmouth falls to 4-8 and 2-2 in the LEC, while WCSU improves to 4-9 and 2-2 in conference play.

The Corsairs took two out of three in the doubles, dropping only the top flight as sophomore Marco Gobbato (Yonkers, N.Y.) and senior Jason Hipona (Orange, Conn.) took down the combination of seniors Dan Chouinard (Westport, Mass.) and Andrew Burdick (Dartmouth, Mass.) to a score of 8-6. In No. 2 doubles, freshmen Ian Patriarca (Springfield, Mass.) and Anthony Joseph (Fairhaven, Mass.) defeated Benjamin Cortez (Danbury, Conn.) and Romney Tiru (Waterbury, Conn.) 8-2. In the final doubles pairing of the day, junior Corey Rafter and freshman Chris Ouellette (Dartmouth, Mass.) swept Adam Howard (Waterford, Conn.) and junior Matthew O'Keefe (Cromwell, Conn.) 8-0.

In the singles matchups, the Corsairs took only two of the six contests against the Colonials. The top flight singles went way of Gobbato as he defeated Chouinard 6-0, 6-3. No. 2 singles also went to the hosting team as Hipona defeated Patriarca (7-5, 2-6, 0-1 retired). WCSU took the No. 4 singles matchup as Tiru bested Rafter 6-4, 6-2.

The Corsairs took the third flight 6-3, 6-2 as Joseph took down Cortez. No. 5 singles saw Ouellette defeat Howard 6-4, 6-1.

No. 6 singles saw the same score as the No. 3 matchup, but the Colonial took the sets 6-3, 6-2 this time as sophomore Jeffery Hensley (Naugatuck, Conn.) defeated senior Tony Xie (Beijing, China).

UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Holy Cross on Monday, starting at 3:30 p.m.
