Entering his 11th season as head
coach of the UMass Dartmouth men's tennis team, Tom Mendell has led
the Corsairs to two of their best seasons ever in the last three
seasons.
Last year, the Corsairs went 11-1, winning all of their regular
season matches and sweeping through the Little East Conference
Tournament. Advancing to the NCAA Division III Championships for
the second time in three seasons, UMD lost to Roger Williams and
finished 11-1.
Three years ago, UMD went 13-2. The Corsairs avenged their only regular seasonloss when they defeated Salem State in theLEC championship match. UMass Dartmouth advanced to the NCAAs, where they defeated Neumann in the first round before losing to seventh-ranked Williams. In both seasons that the Corsairs advanced to the NCAA Division III Championships, Mendell was named Little East Conference Coach of the Year.
In 10 seasons, Mendell's teams have compiled a 67-47 record and he has led his team to double-digit totals in wins on three occasions.
In his second season as a head
coch, the Corsairs captured their eighth LEC Tournament title in
2004 season after posting and 8-4 overall mark and a 3-2 LEC
mark.
A former local tennis professional and intercollegiate tennis
player at Southeastern Massachusetts University and SMTI during the
mid-1960's, Mendell brought awealth of tennis experience to the
position. He was a former tennis instructor at the Point Connett
Tennis Association in Mattapoisett and served as assistant tennis
professional at the Nonquit Tennis Club in Dartmouth.
As part of his work as Recreation Director for the Town of
Fairhaven from 1968 through 1980, Mendell organized tennis clinics
and taught tennis for several years.
An accomplished collegiate tennis player in his own right, Mendell was a member of the University of Massachusetts Amherst men's tennis team which captured the Yankee Conference championship in 1962. Mendell also played collegiate tennis for two seasons at SMTI and SMU, in addition to playing basketball for a season, before graduating from UMass Dartmouth's predecessor institution in 1967.
Mendell taught in the Fairhaven Public School system for several years, serving as head softball coach from 1981 through 1986. He is a member of the Fairhaven High School Hall of Fame. He also served as Athletic Director at the Fairhaven Boys Club for many years.
Mendell first came to the Athletic Department at UMass Dartmouth, serving as an Events Coordinator for the Corsairs' intramural program, a position he still holds. A resident of Fairhaven, Mendell is an active golfer and member of Reservation Country Club.
