March 7, 2009
CUMBERLAND, RI-Freshman Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team made his first match as a Corsair a memorable one.
Lui defeated Spencer Withington of Roger Williams, 7-5, 6-4m at number six singles as UMass Dartmouth posted a 5-4 victory over host Roger Williams in their 2009 season opener at Forecourt Tennis Saturday night.
"That was the big match of the day," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We were tied, 40-4, and he had to overcome cramps to win the match."
Two UMass Dartmouth newcomers won twice. Sophomore Mason Viau (Marion, MA/Bishop Hendricken HS/Connecticut) defeated Brad Bolte at number one singles, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, then combined with senior Christoph Forster (Reading, MA/Reading HS) to defeat David Lange and Dan Kleitz in a tie-breaker at number one doubles, 9-8. Freshman Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) downed Kyle Baker at number three singles, 6-4, 6-1, then teamed with freshman Troy Pandolfi (Danbury, CT) to defeat Bolte and Jeffrey Agonia at number two doubles, 8-4.
"Mason won a three-setter, which was a great match, and freshman Karsten Rathlev won in singles and doubles," said Mendell. "We played three freshmen and a transfer student in our first match, and we won, and I was very pleased."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-0 with the victory, while RWU dell to 0-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Newbury on March 25th.
