NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team lost only two sets Wednesday afternoon in their 2009 home opener against visiting Newbury at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon.
The Corsairs took a 3-0 lead after doubles and defeated Newbury, 8-1.
Eight players made their 2009 debuts for UMass Dartmouth as Head Coach Tom Mendell used the match to get everyone some experience. Freshmen Zach Engstrom (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS), Robert Berg (Billerica, MA) and Alex Ciampi (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) were all double winners. Engstrom defeated Nic Sehovich at number one singles, 6-2, 6-1, and teamed with sophomore Mike Fink (Sagamore Beach, MA/Sturgis HS) to defeat Sehovich and Ryan Sevieri at number one doubles, 8-3. Berg downed Ross Kaye at number four singles, 6-0, 6-0, and combined with senior Ben Brown (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake HS) to defeat Kaye and Matt O'Donnell at number two doubles, 8-3. Ciampi defeated Ben Weiner at number five singles, 6-0, 6-1, and teamed with freshman Joe Matrisciano (Westport, MA/Westport HS) to down Weiner and Jon DiNuzzo at number three doubles, 8-1.
"It was good to play well with a lineup of mostly freshmen and sophomores," said Mendell. "Our players played very well. It's good preparation for the two tough matches we will have next week."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Newbury fell to 0-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Western New England next Thursday. Newbury will host Becker Saturday.
