NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and defeated visiting Rhode Island College, 5-0, in a first-round Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday. The match was halted as soon as the Corsairs reached the five points needed to win.
It was only the fifth time in 11 matches that UMass Dartmouth had swept the doubles. Sophomore Mason Viau (Marion, MA/Bishop Hendricken HS/Connecticut) and freshman Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester) were both double winners. Viau defeated sophomore Nate Rebello (Pawtucket, RI/Tolman HS) at number one singles, 6-2, 6-2, and teamed with senior Christoph Forster (Reading, MA/Reading HS) to defeat freshman Austin Werner (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde HS) and senior Rolando Yotharath (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket HS) at number two doubles, 8-4. Rathlev downed sophomore Mike Aiello (Scituate, RI/Scituate HS) at number three singles, 6-0, 6-3, and combined with freshman Troy Pandolfi (Danbury, CT./Danbury HS) to defeat Rebello and sophomore Matt Allard (Harrisville, RI/Burrillville HS) at number one doubles, 8-1.
The doubles were completed first. Rathlev's victory gave UMD a 4-0 lead, and Viau's win clinched the match.
"We played steady tennis," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We played better in doubles than we usually do. Sweeping the doubles made things a lot easier."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-1 with the victory, while Rhode Island College dropped to 2-13 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action in the semi-finals against either Bridgewater State or UMass Boston at Salem State Friday afternoon. The match was the final action of the season for the Anchormen.
