NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team have received Little East Conference outdoor track and field post-season honors.
Freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was named Little East Conference Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Year, while sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) was named LEC Men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Year.
Masse and Costa are the first UMass Dartmouth student-athletes to win the award. She broke the school record for the shot put at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships with a throw of 41 feet, six inches. Her throw of 40 feet, 7 1/2 inches earned her the championship and set a meet record at the Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championships. Masse, who won the same award indoors, was named LEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week once outdoors, and was chosen Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week three times.
"Jessica had an exceptional year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She was dominant all year, culminating with the second place finish at the ECAC Championships. Jessica established herself as one of the top female throwers in the northeast in Division III, and we look forward to her next three years as a Corsair."
The Little East Conference and New England Alliance champion in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.23 seconds, Costa also finished first at Bridgewater State, qualified for the New England Division III Championships, and was named LEC Men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Year three times outdoors.
"After transferring from UVM, where he did not compete, Kyle adapted very well to the 400 meter hurdles at the collegiate level," said Gardner. "An extremely hard worker who combined a hard major in engineering with college athletics, Kyle did very well in both, He made a significant contribution to our program, and we're looking forward to him getting better with another year under his belt."
