NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team earned Little East Conference weekly honors as a result of their performances at the Open New England Championships last weekend.
Freshman Phito Gondre (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was named LEC Men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week, while freshman Aaron Amado (Randolph, MA/Thayer Academy) was named LEC Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week.
Gondre finished second at 100 meters, setting a school record with a time of 10.76 seconds and finishing two-hundredths of a second out of first place. He also ran the 200 in 22.29 seconds, but did not advance to the finals. Amado finished sixth in the high jump at six feet, 4 ¾ inches. Both Corsairs earned All-New England honors.
"Phito had an outstanding weekend at the Open New England Championships, losing by a mere two-hundredths of a second, He has established himself throughout the indoor and outdoor season as one of the premier sprinters in all of New England, and his performance this past weekend illustrates the impact he has had. It was nice to see Aaron rebound this week. He has a very demanding class schedule that has inhibited his training, as he is in class most days when we practice. As we get near the end of the year and his schedule is freed up a bit, it was good to see him jump at a level he is capable of."
The Corsairs will compete at the Eastern College Athletic Championships this weekend.
