Senior Robert Yarbough
GORHAM, ME-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team did extremely well at the Little East Conference Championships and the New England Alliance Championships at the University of Southern Maine Fieldhouse Saturday.
The men won the LEC and Alliance championships indoors for the first time ever, scoring 145 points to win the 10-team Alliance crown by 51 points over second place Westfield State, which had 94 points, and tallying 177 points to defeat second place Southern Maine, which had 133, in a six-team race in the Little East.
The women were second in the LEC, matching their best performance ever, with 124 points. They were third in the Alliance with 98 points. Southern Maine won both titles, scoring 168 points in the Alliance meet and 205 in the LEC meet.
For the men, freshman Phito Gondre (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was first in the LEC at 55 meters with a school record time of 6.46 seconds. Senior Hymlaire Lamisere (Newton, MA/Newton North HS/Iona) was third in 6.64 seconds, sophomore Chris Perry (Providence, RI/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) was fourth in 6.72 seconds, and freshman Francois Cherduville (Brockton, MA/ Brockton HS) fifth in 6.73 seconds.
At 200 meters, Gondre was first in the LEC in 22.58 seconds and Perry third in 22.97. Junior Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS) was third at 400 meters in 50.97 second, sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) was first at 600 meters in 1:23.87 and sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) second in 1:24.33, junior Scott Connolly (Sharon, MA/Sharon HS) was first (1:57.33) and sophomore Zach Switaj (Tamworth, NH/Kennett Regional HS) was sixth (1:59.58) at 800 meters, and freshman Matt Ferro (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake HS) was fourth at 1000 meters in 2:37.70.
Freshman Eric Karstunen (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) was sixth in the mile in 4:40.07, freshman Kanoa Culverhouse (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) was second (8.13 seconds) and freshman Sean O'Brien (Northborough, MA/Algonquin Regional HS) fifth (8.76) in the 55 meter hurdles, freshman Adam Jones (Amesbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) was second in the high jump at 6-4 and freshman Aaron Amado (Randolph, MA/Thayer Academy) was fifth a 6-1 ¼.
Perry won both the long jump (23 feet, 2 inches) and the triple jump (47-10). Gondre was second (22-2 1.4) and Lamisere fourth (21-0) in the long jump, while Amado was second (46-1) and Jones third in the triple jump. Senior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was first in the weight throw with a school record toss of 58 feet, 7 ½ inches, and third in the shot put at 47-8 ½. Freshman Cody Lusas (Melrose, MA/Melrose HS) was fifth in the shot put at 45-5 ¼. The 4 x 800 meter relay team of Connolly, Ferro, Hinthorne and Switaj was second in 8:11.06, while the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Arneaud, freshman (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS), freshman Jake Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) and Costa won in 3:27.49.
For the women, junior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) was first at 55 meters in 7.46 seconds and second at 200 meters in 26.63. Sophomore Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) was second at 55 meters in 7.55 seconds. Sophomore Kim Urena (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough HS) was fourth at 400 meters in 61.27 seconds. At 600 meters, senior Meaghan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was third in 1:39.23, at 800 meters, freshman Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) was first in 2:21.92 and senior Brittney Carbone (Woburn, MA/Woburn HS) was fourth in 2:31.60, senior Megan Oliveira (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) was fifth at 1000 meters in 3:17.23, and Bohigian was second (5:13.82) and freshman Carolyn Cornell (Abington, MA/Cardinal Spellman HS) was fifth in 5:29.69.
At 3000 meters, senior Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) was second in 10:16.58, in the pole vault, junior Jamie Zizza (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) was sixth at 8 feet, ½ inch, Banks was third in the triple jump at 35-5 ½, sophomore Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was first in the shot put at 39 feet, 8 inches, while senior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was second at 38-3, and Cole was fourth in the weight throw at 43 feet, ½ inch.
The 4 x 200 meter relay team of Van Ness, sophomore Lauren Roche (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional HS)< sophomore Isabel Pierre (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/West Roxbury, MA) and Banks finished first in a school record time of 1:47.15. The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Van Ness, freshman Megan Cutler (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS), sophomore Caitlin Dorr (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) and Urena was fifth in 4:21.06, and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Cornell, Testa, Sheehan and Bohigian was first in 9:47.54.
"I was very pleased," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "The women are about where the guys were last year, and they did a great job. They couldn't have done more. The guys went in as the favorites, and we were pleased with the efforts on both teams. Everyone contributed and some people doubled and tripled."
The Corsairs will return to action at the New England Division III Championships next Saturday.
