Three Earn LEC Track and Field Honors
Sophomore Chris Perry
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Sophomore Chris Perry (Providence, RI/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/Bristol CC) was named LEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Freshman Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) was named LEC Women's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week, while freshman Aaron Amado (Randolph, MA/Thayer Academy) was chosen LEC Men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.
At Saturday's New England Division III Championships, Perry finished fourth in the triple jump at 46 feet, two inches, and was sixth in the long jump at 21-6 ¾. Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) was fourth at 800 meters in a school record time of 2:18.10, while Amado tied for sixth in the high jump at 6-2 ¼,
"Katie's performance is just another indication of the type of season she's having," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She is consistent and has performed at a high level throughout the indoor season. Although Chris was disappointed with his performance last Saturday, it shows the level he has competed at. He scored in both of his events at the Division III New England Championships, and it shows how gifted a student-athlete he is to have an off day and be recognized. Aaron has excelled in two jumping events for us this year. He came within one jump of winning the high jump on Saturday. He has been coming along, and he is only beginning to scratch the surface of what kind of athlete he will be when it's all said and done."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Open New England Championships this weekend.
