Men Second, Women Fourth at Smith's Beynon Invitational
NORTHAMPTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team turned in a strong performance at the Beynon Invitational at the Smith College Indoor Track and Tennis Facility Saturday.
The men scored 155.5 points and finished second in a five-team field. Worcester Polytechnic Institute was first with 215 points. The women scored 109 points and were fourth in a nine-team field. Keene State was first with 176 points.
The women's 4 x 400 meter relay team set a school record while finish second in 4:15.81. The team included senior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS), freshman LaQuaysia Anderson-Jenkins (Brighton, MA/Brighton HS), freshman Michele-Le Miranda (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) and sophomore Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS).
Sheehan was first at 800 meters in 2;23.20, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships. Van Ness was second in the 60 meter dash in 8.21 seconds after running 8.10 in the trials and qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. She also was third at 200 meters in 27.36 seconds. Freshman Barbara Okafor (Hyde Park, MA/Boston Latin HS) was third at 60 meters in 8.30 seconds, Anderson-Jenkins was fourth in 8.37 seconds, and freshman Ifeoma Okeke (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton HS) was sixth in 8.49. Anderson-Jenkins was second at 200 meters in 27.32 seconds. Miranda was fourth in 27.43 seconds, and second at 400 meters in 62.64 seconds, the fourth best time in school history.
In the weight throw, sophomore Bailey Burke (South Dennis, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) was second in the weight throw at 41 feet, 3 ¼ inches and third in the shot put at 34-1 ¼. Junior Lauren Roche (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional HS) was third in the long jump at 15-6 and fourth in the triple jump at 32-4 ¾. Freshman Caroline Daubitz (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam HS) was third at 1000 meters in 3;14.83, freshman Dana Foley (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield HS) was fifth in the 60 meter hurdles in 10.61 seconds and freshman Cassie Remillard (Millville, MA/Bellingham HS) was eighth in 11.26 seconds.
For the men, sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) was first at 600 meters in 1:23.18, which allowed him to qualify for the New England Division III and ECAC Championships. Sophomore Matt Ferro (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake HS) was third in 1:24.54, freshman Ryan Hayes (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake HS) was fifth in 1:27.23, sophomore Jake Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was sixth in 1:28.25, and freshman Matt Montano (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) was eighth in 1:29.19. Freshman Justin Conor (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) was second in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.80 seconds, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships in the third fastest time in school history. Sophomore Kainoa Culverhouse (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) was third in 8.85 seconds and qualified for the New England Division III Regionals, freshman Nikita Truhanovich (Webster, MA/Bartlett HS) was fourth in 9.29 seconds, and sophomore Adam Jones (Amesbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) was seventh in 9.93 seconds.
Sophomore Aaron Amado (Randolph, MA/Thayer Academy) was first in the triple jump at 42 feet, 9 ½ inches, Jones was first in the high jump at 6-4 ¾, Amado tied for second at 6-2 ¾, and freshman Matt Warr (Freetown, MA/Apponequet HS was sixth at 5-10 ¾.
In the shot put, Grunde Brandso was second at 44-9, while sophomore Cody Lusas (Melrose, MA/Melrose HS) was third at 42-5 ½. Lusas was third in the weight throw at 45-11 ¾, freshman Brandon Jarousky (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) was eighth at 60 meters in 7.32 seconds and Culverhouse was eighth in 7.56 seconds, and senior Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS) was third at 200 meters in 23.72 seconds and Hinthorne was seventh (24.05).
At 1000 meters, freshman Cyrenus Paquin (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro HS) was third in 2:41.71, junior Chris Jordan (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) was sixth in 2:46.11, and sophomore Eric Karstunen (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) was eighth in 2:49.19. At 400 meters, Jarousky was fourth in 51.77 seconds, Arneaud fifth in 51.86, and sophomore Matt Barber (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) was eighth in 53.10. Freshman Michael Vaz (Dartmouth, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) was sixth at 3000 meters in 9:38.38, while Jordan was seventh in the mile in 4:39.74. The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Barber, Ferro, Jake Texeira and Jarousky was second in 3:32.43, while the "B" team of Paquin, junior Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset-Berkley HS/Vermont), Montano and Hayes was fifth in 3:40.22.
"It really was a good Division III meet for our team to compete in, the quality of competition was good," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "Indoors, a lot of times we face a lot of Division I and Division II schools, and this was a nice change. We moved some people around to give them more of a challenge. It was a very enjoyable meet, and I was very pleased."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Boston University Terrier Classic next weekend.
