Records Fall at Open New England Championships

EASTON, MA—Three school records fell and members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team finished first and second on their first day of competition at the Open New England Championships at Stonehill's W.B. Mason Stadium Friday.

Junior Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) won the hammer throw with a toss of 182 feet, six inches. Her throw set a stadium record. Junior Brett Croteau (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) finished second in the javelin at 198 feet, nine inches.

Senior Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton North HS) set a school record when he ran 400 meters in 49.06 seconds, and senior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) also broke the school record when she ran 400 meters in 58.35 seconds. Neither made the finals. In the 400 intermediate hurdles, sophomore Jake Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) won his heat in a school record time of 53.62 seconds and advanced to Saturday's finals.

At 100 meters, sophomore Daryl Chingono (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians Boys College) ran 100 meters in 11.21 seconds, while freshman Laquaysia Anderson-Jenkins (Brighton, MA/Brighton HS) ran 100 meters in 12.61 seconds, but neither advanced to the finals.

"It was nice to have three school records, a winner, and a runner-up, we had a pretty good day," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "It was a good little warm up for Jake Texeira, winning his heat and going back to the finals tomorrow. That's how it will be at nationals if he is fortunate enough to advance."

The Corsairs will be looking to perform well again tomorrow. "Our 4 x 1 and 4 x 4 women's relays need to lower their times by four or five tenths of a second to have a good chance to advance, and (sophomore) Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) will race in the steeplechase tomorrow," Gardiner added.

The meet will conclude Saturday.
