PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's track and field placed ninth at the New England Alliance Championships this afternoon inside the Providence Career and Technical High School.
The Corsairs compiled 26 points to finish ahead of UMass Boston (20) and directly behind Eastern Connecticut (29). Bridgewater State (153) edged Southern Maine (145) to capture the team championship.
In the field events, senior Cody Lusas (Melrose, Mass.) registered a 13.64 meter throw in the shot put to take fifth. Sophomore Kevin Cutler (Attleboro, Mass.) finished in sixth place after he leaped 1.93 meters in the high jump and classmate Greg Betsold (Turner Falls, Mass.) took eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.01 meters.
After posting an 8.57 second preliminary time in the 60 meter hurdles, junior Justin Conor (Holden, Mass.) shaved 10 seconds off in the final heat to take third place. Junior Michael Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) covered 5,000 meters in 16 minutes and .52 seconds to place fourth and earn UMass Dartmouth five points.
In the relay events, the 4x400 team earned six points (6th, 3:34.27), while the 4x200 (7th, 1:34.62) and 4x800 (8:51.36) teams generated two points apiece.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21, when the Corsairs travel to Springfield College for the New England Div. III Championships.
