Alex MacMillan Sets New School Record in 200-Meter Dash

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshman Alex MacMillan (Brockton, Mass.) established a new school record on Saturday, leading a contingent of UMass Dartmouth men's indoor track and field athletes to compete at two events over the weekend.

MacMillan ran a time of 22.39 in the 200-meter dash at the prestigious John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University, breaking the mark of 22.42 set by Tim Garcia in 1999. The Corsairs who competed at the Classic went up against runners from all Divisions and from all around the country. MacMillan secured a 62nd place finish amongst the field of 180 competitors.

Also competing at the Classic was freshman Mike Tierney (Norton, Mass.), who won his heat in the 800-meter run in 1:58.31 to finish 81st out of 143. Saturday marked only the second time Tierney has competed in the 800 on his career.

Junior Paul Hamlet (Upton, Mass.) posted a season-best time of 51.12 in the 400-meter dash, earning 98th in a field of 152. Senior Mike Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) ran in the 5,000-meter run, finishing in 15:38.32.

The majority of the Corsair team made the trek to Springfield, Mass. for the Springfield College Invitational. As a unit, UMass Dartmouth finished fifth with 71.5 points.

Freshman Samir Williams (Brockton, Mass.) posted a successful day, winning the 200-meter dash in 23.29 and taking runner-up in the 60-meter dash in 7.13.

In the field events, junior Kevin Cutler (Attleboro, Mass.) took second in the high jump, clearing 6-8 on his first attempt. Freshman Joao Baptista (Somerville, Mass.) took fourth in the event, clearing 6-4.

The Corsair throwers continued their strong indoor season, as Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) took second in the shot put with a distance of 14.10m and sixth in the weight throw at 13.49m. Junior Greg Betsold (Turners Falls, Mass.) posted a personal bests in both events, tossing 12.80m in the shot put to place fifth and adding a fourth-place finish in the weight throw with a distance of 14.10m.

Freshman throwers Nick Caswell (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and John Edward Segun (Brockton, Mass.) each registered personal bests as well, with Caswell recording a throw of 12.62m in the shot put and 12.93 in the weight throw. Segun hit his best in the shot put at 12.67m.

The Corsairs return to Boston University next Saturday for the Scarlet & White Invitational.
