SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth outdoor track and field teams continued the closing weeks of the year over the weekend, as several Corsairs competed at the 2016 New England Division III Championships hosted by Springfield College.
The men collected 21 points, good for 13th of 31 teams to score on the day. The women wrapped up four points, finishing 29th of 30.
Freshman Stephen Tencati (Clinton, Mass.) continued his success in the javelin in his rookie campaign, taking second in the field of 25. His mark of 191-11 (58.50m) gathered eight points for the Corsair men. Sophomore John Kleczkowski (North Attleboro, Mass.) gave UMass Dartmouth the second top-ten finish in the event, placing eighth with a throw of 173-03 (52.90m).
Placing fourth on the meet was sophomore Alex MacMillan (Brockton, Mass.), who ran a season-best time of 22.11 in the 200-meter dash. He bettered his previous season best by just one hundredth of a second.
In the other throwing events, junior Greg Betsold (Turners Falls, Mass.) and sophomore Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) both earned top-ten finishes. Betsold turned in a sixth-place distance of 164-09 (50.21m) in the hammer throw, while Louf-Woods was eighth overall in the shot put, marking in at 46-2.5 (14.58m).
For the women, senior Summer Jones (East Bridgewater, Mass.) ran a season-best time of 58.48, crossing the line in sixth place to collect three individual points. In addition, she teamed with sophomore Raybryana Dasher (New Bedford, Mass.), junior Hunter Carden (Branford, Conn.) and junior Meaghan Shurtleff (Dartmouth, Mass.) in the 4x400-meter relay, finishing eighth of 13 teams in 4:05.85.
Wrapping up Corsair top ten finishes was freshman Joao Baptista (Somerville, Mass.), who placed sixth in the high jump at 6-2 (1.93m). Due to rainy conditions throughout, senior Kevin Cutler (Attleboro, Mass.) was not able to post a height on the day.
The final meet for UMass Dartmouth before the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships will take place next weekend, as several Corsairs will compete at the Open New England Championships at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Conn.
