George Papoulis Tabbed LEC Men’s Rookie Track Athlete of the Year

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) collected one of the Little East Conference’s four outdoor track and field major awards on Monday, earning Men’s Rookie Track Athlete of the Year accolades as voted up on by the league’s head coaches.

Papoulis becomes the fourth Corsair since the inception of the LEC Major Awards in 2008 to earn Men’s Rookie Track Athlete of the Year and is the second-straight UMass Dartmouth honoree, joining teammate Alex MacMillan who garnered the award last year. At April 29’s New England Alliance Outdoor Championships, Papoulis raced to the Alliance and LEC titles in the 800-meter run in a personal-best time of 1:54.13. The title marked his second in as many tries, as he previously won the 600-meter run title at the Alliance Indoor Championships during the winter.

Throughout the outdoor season, Papoulis finished in the top 10 in every single one of his races in the both the 800 and the 400-meter dash. Following the Trinity College Invitational on April 22, Papoulis was named the LEC Men’s Rookie Track Athlete of the Week with his winning 400 time of 49.77, the seventh-fastest time in program history. Most recently, he took 11th overall in the 800 at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships last Saturday, timing in at 1:55.53.

Papoulis and several additional Corsairs will compete this coming weekend at the cross-divisional NEICAAA Open New England Outdoor Championships beginning on Friday, May 12. He is seeded 16th in the 800-meter dash.
