Papoulis Races into National Qualifying Picture at Tufts Last Chance Meet

MEDFORD, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) put himself even further in contention for a national championship bid on Saturday as four Corsair indoor track and field athletes competed at Tufts' Last Chance Qualifier meet. The competitors looked to give themselves one final opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

On the Track
Papoulis took to the track in the 800-meter run, and posted a personal-best time to place himself squarely in the NCAA qualifying race for the event. He crossed the line in 1:53.72 to place second overall and move up to 11th nationally. As a result, Papoulis could land amongst the declared entries for the NCAA meet, as the top 15-ranked individuals in each event will compete.

Senior Reme DiGiovanni (Southborough, Mass.) competed in her final indoor meet on her career on Saturday. In the mile, she timed in at 5:17.24 to place 11th.

In the Field
Junior Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) registered a massive personal-best in the weight throw to give himself a shot at qualifying for the NCAA meet. He tossed 57-11.0 (17.65m) to shatter his previous best by 13 inches and finish second in the event. Currently, Louf-Woods sits 21st in the national rankings in the weight throw and 41st in the shot put as the field announcement nears.

Another second-place finisher was sophomore Joao Baptista (Somerville, Mass.) in the high jump. He cleared a height of 6-5.5 (1.97m) and narrowly miss the top place on the event due to progressions.

On the women's side in the high jump, freshman Danielle Devine (Bernardston, Mass.) registered a height of 4-11 (1.50m) in her return to competition, tying for 10th on the event.
