WESTFIELD, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth outdoor track and field teams collected 26 top-three finishes, including eight top finishes on the day at the Jerry Gravel Classic hosted by Westfield State on Saturday afternoon. Additionally, four Corsairs competed on Friday evening at Connecticut College's Silfen Invitational.
Men's Score: 4th (119 point) of 5 teams
Women's Score: 3rd (135.5) of 4 teams
Freshman Hilda Kusi (Framingham, Mass.) was the first Corsair to win an event on the afternoon, after she tripped the timer in the 100-meter dash at 12.64. Raybryana Dasher (New Bedford, Mass.) won her first event of the day at 59.18 in the 400-meter dash, before claiming the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.78. Senior Reme DiGiovanni (Southborough, Mass.) took the 800-meter run in 2:23.96, nearly five seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
On the men's side, junior Jared Louf –Woods (Salem, Mass.) picked up wins in both the shot put and the hammer throw, with distances of 49-3.5 (15.02m) and 189-2 (57.67m), respectively. His hammer mark set a new personal-best, and currently sits as the third-best mark in the nation so far this season.
Junior John Kleczkowski (N. Attleboro, Mass.) picked up his first event win of the year in the javelin, with a throw of 176-4 (53.76m) that just beat out teammate Steve Tencati's (Clinton, Mass.) throw of 173-11 (53.03m). Alex MacMillan (Brockton, Mass.) was the only runner to cut under 11 seconds with a time of 10.90 to win the 100-meter dash.
In the Field
Sophomore Taryn Carley (Kingston, Mass.) picked up a second-place finish in the javelin, and a third-place throw in the hammer. Her best throws were measured out to 110-8 (33.73m) in the javelin and 132-11 (40.51m) in the hammer. Freshman MacKenzie Garvey (Plymouth, Mass.) took second in the shot put with a distance on 35-11.5 (10.96m), registering the 10th-best throw in school history.
Senior Meaghan Shurtleff (Dartmouth, Mass.) jumped 34-5.5 (10.50m) for a second-place finish in the triple jump, and in the high jump, freshman Caitlyn Demers (Dartmouth, Mass.) successfully cleared 4-10.5 (1.49m) for a second-place finish.
Greg Betsold (Turners Falls, Mass.) laid claim to a thir- place finish in the men's discus with a throw 127-9 (38.94m). In the high jump, Joao Baptista (Somerville, Mass.) surpassed 6-4.25 (1.94m) for a second-place finish.
On the Track
In the 400-meter hurdles, the Corsairs finished second and third. Demers finished just 0.08 seconds behind Westfield State's Lexi Popp in 1:07.71, while Shurtleff gathered the third spot in 1:12.27.
MacMillan added to his total with a second-place finish in the 200 meter dash, timing in at 22.10. Both Tyree Gorham (Brockton, Mass.) and Delpiero Beaumont (Boston, Mass.) took third placements, in the 800-meter run and the 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Gorham finished in 2:08.40, while Beaumont crossed the finished line at 22.10.
Four Corsair track athletes competed Friday night at Connecticut College's Silfen Invitational
Kirstie Harden (Fitchburg, Mass.) ran the 1500-meter run, and finished with her fastest time outdoors in 5:02.22. Freshman George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) took fourth in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 1:55.45.
Both UMass Dartmouth squads will take the trip to Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. next Saturday to compete in the Trinity Invitational.
