MEDFORD, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's track & field team sent five athletes to the Tufts University Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday, with the meet serving as the conclusion of the 2017-18 indoor seasons for those who have not punched their ticket to the Div. III Indoor Championships next week.
In the track, sophomore George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) remains on the boarder of his trip to Nationals for the 800-meter, as he maintained the 15th spot in the country when he finished 5th with his time of 1:53.95. That time missed the podium by under a second. Newcomer Moisee Irizarry (Peabody, Mass.) needed to shed one-tenths off his time to earn a trip to Alabama, but was unable to do so when he finished in 8.68 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Fellow-freshman Ramon Medrano (Peabody, Mass.) was not far behind when he stopped the timer at 9:02 to log a seventh-place mark.
In the field, Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) tuned up before his first-ever trip to the Indoor National Championships, posting his fourth first-place toss of the year in the shot put with a distance of 15.70m (51-51 ft.). After a week off from the weight throw, the senior punched in a second-place effort when he unloaded a mark of 18.87m (61-91 ft. Junior Joao Baptista (Medford, Mass.) and Irizarry rounded out the Corsair competitors, both finishing top-ten in the high-jump, with the junior logging the highest jump of the two, finishing seventh when he cleared the bar at 1.98m (6.5 ft.).
The final event of the indoor season comes on March 10th in form of the NCAA Div. III Indoor Championships with Louf-Woods and Papoulis set to represent UMass Dartmouth in their respective events.
