Men's Indoor Track & Field Solid In Season Opener At UMass Boston Open

ROXBURY, Mass. --  Both UMass Dartmouth indoor track & field teams enjoyed a highly successful start to their respective seasons on Saturday afternoon, as the Corsairs combined for 12 top 10 individual performances at the non-scoring UMass Boston Indoor Open that took place at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Senior Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) led the way on the men’s side, as he took top honors and set a school indoor record in the shot put (16.45 meters/53 feet, 11 ¾ inches) while posting a runner-up finish in the weight throw (17.97 meters/58 feet, 11 ½ inches).  Junior George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) set a meet record while adding a first place performance in the 1,000 meters (2:30.99) for UMass Dartmouth, which received a trio of respective fifth place finishes from senior Joao Baptista (Malden, Mass.), junior Travis Dolcine (Somerville, Mass.) and freshman Evan Vasconcellos (Westport, Mass.) in the long jump (6.45 meters/21 feet, 2 inches), mile (4:33.96) and 500 meters (1:09.24).

Senior Jason Karakaedos (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Steve Stromski (Melrose, Mass.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Corsairs in the 3,000 meters with time of 9:00.93 and 9:04.02, while freshman Andrew Swallow (Framingham, Mass.) added a seventh place finish in the shot put (13.23 meters/43 feet, 5 inches).  UMass Dartmouth’s 4 x 400 meter relay team consisting of Papoulis, senior Mike Tierney (Norton, Mass.), junior Delpiero Beaumont (Dorchester, Mass.) and sophomore Moisse Irizarry (Peabody, Mass.) registered a fifth place performance with a time of 3:33.67 in the event.

On the women’s side, junior MacKenzie Garvey (Plymouth, Mass.) posted a third place finish in the shot put (11.81 meters/38 feet, 9 inches) for the Corsairs, who received a fifth place performance in the 5,000 meters (19:18.80) from junior Jess O’Reilly (Millis, Mass.) along with a 10th place finish from sophomore Taylor Walsh (Groveland, Mass.) in the mile (5:36.35).

Both UMass Dartmouth squads resume their schedules on Saturday, January 12th by heading to Medford, Mass. to compete at the Tufts Invitational that begins at 10:00 am.
