Track Strong in Indoor Opener at Northeastern

BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team turned in a few strong performances in the 2008-09 season opener at the Northeastern Husky Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday. No team scores were recorded at the meet.
For the women, sophomore Jermai Harrison (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) led the way, finishing sixth overall and setting a school record in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 10 inches. Senior Hilary Baker (Middleborough, MA/Middleborough HS) threw the shot 34 feet, ¾ inch. Freshman Patience Noah (Framingham, MA/Keefe Tech) was eighth in the triple jump at 33 feet, 9 ¼ inches; freshman Alison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) high jumped five feet, which was a personal best, and freshman Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) ran 3000 meters in 11:15.60.
For the men, sophomore Kevin Markie (North Attleboro, MA/Nichols) won the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 1 ¾ inches, which places him seventh on the Corsairs' all-time list. Sophomore Nick Deininger (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS) was 13th in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.33 seconds, while freshman Brian McArdle (Winchester, MA/Winchester Regional HS) was 14th in 8.41 seconds. Junior Corey Sleep (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) turned in the eighth fastest 200 meter time in school history in 23.58 seconds. Graduate student Eric Holmes (Abington, MA/Abington HS) was ninth at 5000 meters in 15:51.92, and sophomore Marcus Williams (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) long jumped 20 feet, 8 ½ inches. At 800 meters, senior Tyler Buck (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center HS) was sixth in 2:02.09, while junior Erik Gonzalez (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS) was eighth in 2:03.19.
The Corsairs entered two teams in the 4 x 400 meter relay, and each team won their heat. The team of freshman Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS), freshman Tom Barry (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS), sophomore Brian Hopkins (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional HS), and sophomore Bob Miller (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) finished first in their heat in 3:33.1, while the team of senior Jimmy Knuuttila (Lunenburg, MA/Lunenburg HS), Buck, junior Tim Whelan (Abington, MA/Abington HS) and sophomore Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) won their heat in 3:36.6.
"It was a very nice start for both teams," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "It was nice that the last event for the guys was the triple jump, and everyone got to see Kevin Markie win in his first meet at UMass Dartmouth. The women's shot put also came at the end of the meet, and it was nice to see Jermai set a school record. A lot of our people had very good days for the first meet."
The Corsairs will compete at Harvard next Saturday.
