SMITHFIELD, RI-Several members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field teams turned in solid performances in their 2009 season opener at the Bryant Invitational at the Bryant Track and Turf Complex Saturday.
There was no team scoring at the meet.
Freshman Robert Yarbrough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, 9 ¾ inches, a throw that ranks as the sixth best throw in school history. Freshman Tom Barry (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) was eighth in the javelin at 160 feet, five inches, while freshman Kevin Gilmore (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) finished seventh at 5000 meters in 15:52.01.
Sophomore Jermai Harrison (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) was fifth in the shot put at 36 feet, two inches and was eighth in the discus in 106-7. In the javelin, freshman Emily Migre (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) was ninth at 111 feet, one inch, while freshman Emily Hall (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was 13th at 106-7. Freshman Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was seventh in the shot put at 35-2.
"I was please for the first meet," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We brought our throwers to basically allow them to get the rust off prior to our first meet with our full team next week. This will set them up for the rest of the season."
The Corsairs will return to action when they travel to Fitchburg State next Saturday.
