Corsairs Finish First, Second at UMD Invitational

Final Stats

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team performed well at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational at the UMD Athletic Complex Saturday.

The women finished first in a 10-team field, scoring 178 points and finishing five points ahead of second-place Worcester State. The men were second of nine teams with 131 points. WSU finished first with 160 points.

The women's 4 x 100 meter relay team of senior Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), sophomore Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS), sophomore Shannon Singletary (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) and senior Briley Morrill (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional HS) finished first in 51.10 seconds. At 800 meters, junior Meagan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) finished first in 2:19.73, breaking UMD's record which had stood for 34 years. Van Ness won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.72 while freshman Lauren Roche finished second in the 200 meter dash at 28.84.

In the shot put, freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) finished first at 37 feet, 10 inches, Junior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/ Dartmouth HS) finished second at 37-1/4, and senior Ulrike Schonemund (Langgoon, Germany) was third at 33-9 1/4. In the discus, Masse finished first at 112-02 while Cole finished third at 105-04. Junior Emily Migre (Whitman, MA/ Whitman-Hanson HS) finished first in the javelin at 114 feet, ten inches.

For the men, junior Hymlaire Lamisere (Newton, MA/Newton North HS/Iona) finished first in 100 meters at 11.50. Freshman Marcus Cusick (Westport, MA/Diman Regional HS) finished third in the 400 meter dash at 50:64. Senior Nick Santoro (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) finished first in the 5000 meter run in 15:39.39. In the javelin, freshman Joe Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) finished second at 184 feet, 11 inches while freshman Brett Croteau (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) was third in the same event at 165-10.

In the discus, freshman Conway King (Boston, MA/O'Bryant HS) was first at 132-08. Freshman Marcus Cusick (Westport, MA/Diman Regional HS) finishing third at 400 meters in 50.64. Sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) finished second in the 400 meter hurdles in 57.36 seconds. Junior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was second in the shot put at 45-3 1/2 and fourth in the discus at 130-01.

"It was a very good team effort" said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "I was pleased that the women won the invitational meet. Meaghan Bohigian broke a 34 year old school record and Jillian Van Ness won over a good field in the 100. The men had a good solid day. We are ready to roll next week at Northeastern and I'm glad for all the support we received at the meet today." The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Northeastern next Saturday.
