BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team turned in a strong performance in their second and final meet before the fall semester break at the Harvard Open at Gordon Track Saturday. No team scores were recorded at the meet.
For the women, junior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) set a school record when she finished 11th at 200 meters in 26.67 seconds. She qualified for both the ECAC and New England Division III Championships. At 60 meters, she finished 15th in 8.03, the second fastest time ever at UMD, qualifying her for both championships.
In the mile, senior Meaghan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was second in 5:15.03, the second best time at UMD. Freshman Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) was third in 5:36.01, the fourth best time ever at UMD, and senior Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) was seventh in 5:21.27, the sixth best time at UMD. She qualified for the New England Division III Championships, while Sheehan qualified for both championships. In the shot put, sophomore Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was fourth with a throw of 40 feet, 8 1/4 inches. Sophomore Kim Urena (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough HS) ran 400 meters in 61.96 seconds, the second fastest time at UMD, qualifying her for the New England Division III meet. Freshman Megan Cutler (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) ran 500 meters in 1:27.06, the third best time at UMass Dartmouth. Senior Brittney Carbone's (Woburn, MA/Woburn HS) time of 2:30.02 at 800 meters was the ninth best time in school history. Sophomore Lauren Roche (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional HS) long jumped 16 feet, 1/2 inch, the 10th best mark at UMD, and triple jumped 33-7, the sixth best jump in school history.
For the men, freshman Phito Gondre (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) set a school record in the 60 meter dash,, finishing second in 6.91 seconds, Senior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) won the weight throw with a toss of 56 feet, 11 inches, his second best throw ever, and was fourth in the shot put at 47-8 1/2, his best mark ever in that event. In the triple jump, sophomore Chris Perry (Providence, RI/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) broke his own school record when he finished second in the triple jump at 48 feet, 9 1/2 inches. He was eighth in the 60 meter dash in 7.13 seconds and 5th at 200 meters in 22.79 seconds, the second best time at UMD. Senior Hymlaire Lamisere (Newton, MA/Newton North HS/Iona) was ninth at 200 meters, also in 7.13.
In the long jump, freshman Jon Williams (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was sixth with a jump of 22 feet, 1 1/2 inches, qualifying for both championships with the eight best jump at UMD. Gondre was ninth at 21-9 1/2, Lamisere 12th at 20-11 1/2. At 800 meters, junior Scott Connolly (Sharon, MA/Sharon HS) was seventh in 2:00.32, sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) was ninth in 2:00.90, and freshman Matt Ferro (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake HS) was 12th in 2:02.25. In the high jump, freshman Adam Jones (Amesbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) was 10th in the high jump at 6-2 3/4, while sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) was 11th at 400 meters in 51.50 seconds, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships.
"We turned in another strong performance," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We've had a really good December. Chris Perry and Phito Gondre would have qualified for nationals under the procedure they used last year. It was nice to see Jillian Van Ness improve her school record in the 200. We've had a lot of good performances, and it's a good way to usher in the new year."
The Corsairs will break for the holidays, and return to action at Rhode Island January 13th.
