NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team have earned weekly Little East Conference honors.
Freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was named LEC Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. Freshman Joe Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was named LEC Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week, and sophomore Kyle Costa (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Vermont) was named LEC Men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.
At last Saturday's Solomon Husky Invitational, hosted by Northeastern, Masse was second in the shot put at 38 feet, one half inch, and was fourth in the discus with a throw of 110 feet, one inch. Texeira finished first in the javelin with a throw of 177 feet, one inch. Costa was second in the 400 meter hurdles in 59.5 seconds, and was also a member of the 4 x 400 meter relay team that finished third in 3:30.11.
"Jessica continues to be a multiple threat in the shot and the discus," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She's won this award every week so far this season, and, in a short period of time, we've come to rely on her, week in and week out. Joe threw very well, considering the wind conditions that everyone dealt with in meets across New England. Looking at the other meets, Joe's throw was even more impressive, and he continues to be a dominant force at the Division III level in New England. After a one year hiatus, it's good to see Kyle come back and run as well as he has both during the indoor and the outdoor seasons. He ran a strong race in pretty poor conditions for the middle of April last week, and we expect him to continue to improve as the year progresses."
The Corsairs will return to action when they travel to Connecticut College this Saturday.
