April 20, 2010
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team have earned Little East Conference honors.
Junior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) has been named LEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, junior Linee Mello-Frost's (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) has been named Co-LEC Women's Track Athlete of the Week, and freshman Shannon Singletary (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) has been named LEC Women's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.
At last week's Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College, Nygaard finished first at 800 meters in 1:58.95. Mello-Frost turned in her second consecutive record-breaking performance, eclipsing the school record in the 100 meter hurdles when she finished first in 15.34 seconds, and being a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team that also broke a school record when they finished first in 50.87 seconds. Singletary was also a member of the record-breaking 4 x 100 meter relay team. She also was third at 200 meters in 27.18 seconds, the ninth best time in school history, and.was fifth at 100 meters in 13.10 seconds.
"Eric recorded a personal best in the 800, and pretty much led that race from start to finish," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "He's a very versatile distance runner for us, who's been a solid contributor in both the 800 and the 1500 throughout the year. For Linee, it was the second week in a row that she's broken the school record in the 100 meter hurdles, and she also led off our achool record 100 meter relay team. Her time in the hurdles was run on a day when the temperature was in the 40s. Hopefully, we'll get warmer weather as she gets closer to a sub 15 second clocking. Shannon has been a big reason why our relay team has improved as much as it has. She's also a major contributor in the 100 and the 200 meter events."
The Corsairs will return to action when they host the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Outdoor Championships this Saturday.
