Gardiner, Corsairs Earn LEC Post-Season Track and Field Honors
Aug. 3, 2010
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Head Coach Steve Gardiner and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team have received post-season Little East Conference honors.
Gardiner has been named Little East Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Conference Coach of the Year, while the Corsair men's team received the LEC Sportsmanship Award.
Both teams finished third at the Little East Conference championships last spring.
"It was good to see Steve rewarded for all of his hard work," said UMass Dartmouth Director of Athletics Ian Day. "What is exciting about our program is that is going to be even better in the coming years."
"I was surprised," said Gardiner. "It is a tribute to the women who were on the team in the fall of 2008. When I took over, there were only six people remaining, and four of them really stuck together and had faith. (Senior) Jess Carpenter (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) and (juniors) Jermai Harrison (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS), Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and Briley Morrill (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) are the remaining student-athletes who were here then and a lot of credit goes to them, their attitude, and their willingness to help us build our program."
Gardiner was also pleased with the sportsmanship honor. "In all the years I've coached, one of the most important things is for us to be good citizens, good teammates and for us to show good sportsmanship," said Gardner. "I'm proud of both of our teams for showing good sportsmanship."
