WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's cross country team finished in third place at the 2014 Little East Conference Championship this afternoon at Mount Greylock High School. Junior Mike Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) led the Corsairs for the third time this season, earning All-Little East Conference, first-team honors.
Keene State College captured the team championship with a meet-low 24 points, followed by the University of Southern Maine. UMass Dartmouth was third among the six competing conference members with 63 total points, five markers behind the Huskies.
Vaz was the top Corsair runner and sixth overall, completing the 8-kilometer hilly and blustery course in a time of 27 minutes, 26.14 seconds. He is the highest UMass Dartmouth finisher in the conference championship since 2011, when Nick Santoro placed fourth.
Junior Ryan Hayes (Kingston, Mass.) logged a season-best 8k time of 27:57.81 for 12th place, one spot and four seconds ahead of senior Eric Karstunen (Pembroke, Mass.).
Sophomore Sean Herlihy (Walpole, Mass.) was the Corsairs' No. 4 runner, posting a time of 28 minutes, 14.36 seconds to finish 15th overall. Senior Matthew Ferro (Halifax, Mass.) rounded out the UMass Dartmouth scoring by placing 17th with a time of 28 minutes, 21.08 seconds.
Eastern Connecticut senior Lee Cattanach (New London, Conn.) became the first Warrior to win the individual title, breaking the tape at 26 minutes, 24.44 seconds.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at noon on Nov. 8, when the Corsairs compete at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships in Westfield, Mass.
