BOSTON – Damp conditions did not stop junior Jason Karakaedos (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) from claiming top-20 finishes in the men's field at the 49th Annual Codfish Bowl, as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men took seventh and the women 12th at Franklin Park on Saturday.
Men: 7th of 10 teams (163 points)
Women: 12th of 14 teams (289 points)
How it Happened
Karakaedos led UMass Dartmouth with a 16th-place finish, timing in at 27:37 with Pires right behind in 17th at 27:41. On the women's side, sophomore Jessica O'Reilly (Millis, Mass.), sophomore Victoria Spitaels (West Newton, Mass.), and freshman Taylor Walsh (Groveland, Mass.) finished within the top third of the 184 participants to take on the 5K race.
Freshman Travis Dolcine (Somerville, Mass.) improved on his time from last week's UMass Dartmouth Invitational, where he finished in 30:16, by completing today's run in 29:31. For the women, junior captain Christina Ruiz (Taunton, Mass.) also cut down her time from last week's run, finishing seven seconds quicker than she did at her own campus for an overall time of 23:11 on Saturday.
Freshman Stephanie Brogdon (Chelmsford, Mass.) did not let the weather conditions keep her from lowering her finish time as well. Amber Cyr (Acushnet, Mass.) and Melissa Goodwin (Norfolk, Mass.) finished back-to-back in Saturday's race as the two were less than 35 seconds apart.
The duo of Karakaedos and Pires notched 23 points combined, with only four seconds separating the two Corsairs. Today's point total comes just second to the duo's performance at the Jim Sheehan Meet on Sept. 2, when the pair posted a point total of eight.
UMass Dartmouth will next run at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass. as part of the James Early Invitational on Saturday, October 7th. The men are scheduled for an 11:15 a.m. start time, with the women to follow at noon.
