NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's cross country team finished eighth out of 37 teams and the women were 23rd in a 42-team field at the annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational at the UMD Athletic Complex Saturday.
The Corsair men scored 255 points, 74 behind seventh-place UMass Lowell and 74 ahead of ninth-place Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Keene State was first with 68 points. The UMD women scored 700 points, 12 in back of 22nd-place Wheaton, and 13 in front of 24th-place Babson. The men scored 406 points and finished 13th in the 18-team sub-varsity race.
Junior Nick Santoro (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) was the top finisher for the men in the five-mile race, finishing 40th in 25:50. Sophomore Kevin Gilmore (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) was 42nd in 25:53, senior Tim Whelan (Abington, MA/Abington HS) was 52nd in 26:11, freshman Jeremy Francisco (Dartmouth, MA/Darmouth HS) was 55th in 26:13, junior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was 66th in 26:25, sophomore Steve Burke (Norwell, MA/Norwell HS) was 108th in 27:21, and sophomore Ryan Sechovicz (Kingston, MA/Silver Lake Regional HS) finished 169th in 28:56.

Sophomore Megan Oliveira (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) was 112th in 20:38, sophomore Tessa McGrail (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS) was 154th in 21:22, senior Jess Carpenter (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) was 182nd in 21:46, freshman Rachel Leblanc (Berkley, MA/Somerset HS) was 183rd in 21:47, sophomore Stacey Dybel (Littleton, MA/Notre Dame Academy) was 195th in 22:03, sophomore Meaghan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was 212th in 22:21, and sophomore Emily Migre (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) was 251st in 23:17.
Men's sub-varsity finishers included senior David Buschini (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport HS), 37th in 27:50, junior Wes Meserve (Merrimack, MA/Merrimack HS), 72nd in 29:28, freshman Brad Spooner (Carver, MA/Carver HS), 82nd in 30:07, sophomore Kevin Cordaro (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS), 102nd in 32:16, and sophomore Joe Collins (West Roxbury, MA/Norfolk Agricultural Vo Tech), 113th in 34:48.
"For the men, I think the spread between our first and fifth runners was 35 seconds, which is very good, and that's the key to top level running," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "We beat some pretty good schools. Jeremy Francisco was terrific again for a freshman. Eric Nygaard, who did not have cross country at his high school, and Tim Whelan, who did a great job of training during the summer, did well. We lost four of our top five guys from last year, but our guys really came to race this year."
"On the women's side, Caitlin McGarigal did a great job of finishing after she got knocked down at the start of the race," said Hird. "She continues to improve, and we haven't yet seen her at her best. Megan Oliveira and Tessa McGrail also ran well, as did Jess Carpenter and freshman Rachel Leblanc. Our women just need more experience."
The Corsairs will return to action when they travel to the Connecticut College Invitational next Saturday.
