WESTFIELD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's cross country team finished sixth in a 21-team field at the James Earley Invitational, hosted by Westfield State at Stanley Park Saturday.
The men had 178 points, 151 points behind first-place Trinity. The Corsair women had only four runners and did not receive a team score. Carleton was first with 25 points.
Freshman Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) led the women in the 5k race, finishing 18th in 20:08. Sophomore Jess Carpenter (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) was 52nd in 21:28, freshman Stacey Dybel was 62nd in 21:50, and sophomore Deirdre Ginley (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) was 63rd, also in 21:50.
For the men, senior Eric Holmes (Abington, MA/Abington HS) was 10th in 26:47, freshman Travis Wright (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) was 34th in 27:55, freshman Jared Correia (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was 35th in 27:56, sophomore Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was 49th in 28:29,
junior Matt Lemanski (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow HS) was 75th in 29:12, freshman Ricky Goldblatt (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) was 103rd in 30:03, sophomore Wes Meserve (Merrimack, MA/Merrimack HS) 132nd in 31:13, sophomore Ryan Sechovicz (Kingston, MA/Silver Lake Regional HS) was 135th in 31:19, and freshman Dan Rutledge (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro HS) was 178th in 33:02.
"All of the women ran well," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Deon Barrett. "Courtney Testa has led us all year, Jess Carpenter ran a phenomenal race, and Stacey and Deirdre worked well together. For the men, Travis, Jared and Eric Nygaard really stepped it up, considering that we were missing three of our top runners due to injury and illness. Eric Holmes has been our leader for the past couple of years, and he did a great job, and Matt Lemanski had a breakthrough race. The team score really does not indicate how well we ran."
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Williams next Saturday.
