Ben Girard Earns Little East Cross Country Honors

Sept. 19, 2011

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- For the second week in a row, a member of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's cross country team has been honored by the Little East Conference.

Freshman Ben Girard (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex HS) has been named LEC Men's Rookie Runner of the Week.

Girard led the Corsairs at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational last Saturday, finishing 55th in 26:40 over the five mile course.

"We knew Ben was a pretty good runner when we recruited him, but with freshmen, it's always a case of how long it will take them to adjust to five mile racing," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "Ben has taken to it like a duck takes to water. He's pretty fearless when he runs; he goes out and challenges everybody. His time Saturday was a pretty good time for someone in their second collegiate race ever. The more experience he gets, the better he will get."

The Corsairs will return to action when they visit the Codfish Bowl this Saturday.
