Colonials March Past Corsairs, 74-54

DANBURY, Conn. - Chelsea Mone (Bristol, Conn.) and Caroline Brasa (East Hartford, Conn.) each recorded a double-double in Western Connecticut State University's 74-54 victory over University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at Feldman Arena on Thursday night.

Mone led the winners with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Brasa came off the bench to tally 12 points and 10 caroms for the Colonials, now 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference.

Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) led the Corsairs with 19 points and eight boards. Beth Castantini (Newburyport, Mass.) added a dozen points for UMD.

UMass Dartmouth raced out to a 10-4 lead following a jumper in the paint by Bornemann with 13:50 remaining in the first half.

Western went on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes and took a 16-10 lead after a lay in by Emily Dobson (Westerly, R.I.) at the 8:48 mark of the first stanza. The Colonials never trailed again.

The Corsairs, now 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the league, tied the contest for the third and final time, 16-16, when Bornemann canned a long three pointer from the top of the key.

The hosts scored 19 of the half's final 29 points to take a 35-26 into intermission.

Western built a 22-point lead twice in the second half. The final time was when recent addition Maggie Eberhardt (Thomaston, Conn.) hit the front end of two free throws in the closing seconds. She finished with 15 points for the winners.

UMass Dartmouth will return to Little East Conference action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, when the Corsairs travel to the University of Southern Maine (8-4, 1-1 LEC).
