DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up the first national weekly honor of her career on Tuesday, landing as one just five players nationally on the D3hoops.com Women’s Basketball Team of the Week.
The forward gathered her second LEC Player of the Week nod on Monday after leading UMass Dartmouth to two wins last week. In the midst of averaging 24.5 points and 14 rebounds per game, she converted on 68 percent shooting from the floor (19-of-28), with 17 of her 28 rebounds coming on the offensive end of the floor. Against Southern Maine on Saturday, she finished with 26 points and 14 boards, including 16 points in the second half, to lead the Corsairs to a 64-56 comeback win. The next day, Examond posted 23 points and 14 rebounds as UMass Dartmouth cruised to a 76-57 non-conference victory over Regis.
Heading into Wednesday’s competition, Examond paces the LEC in rebounds per game (10.3) and field goal percentage (62.9) and owns five double-doubles on the season, leading Division III’s ninth-best scoring offense (80.3 points per game). Individually, she is 19th nationally with 20.5 points per game.
UMass Dartmouth seeks its seventh-straight victory tonight at 5:30 p.m., tipping off in LEC play at Eastern Connecticut. The Corsairs (9-2 overall) look to remain unbeaten in in conference competition, as they sit tied atop the LEC standings with UMass Boston.
