PAWTUCKET, R.I. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sophomore Ashley Brown (Fairhaven, Mass.) became the third Corsair this season to earn Little East Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, on the heels of two conference wins last week.
Brown averaged a consistent 15.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals in UMass Dartmouth’s record-setting week. On Wednesday at Eastern Connecticut, the sophomore guard put forth 16 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for her first career double-double as UMass Dartmouth downed the Warriors 83-75. Three days later, Brown tallied 15 points and nine boards with three steals defensively -as the Corsairs dismantled the defending LEC champions Keene State by a 77-59 score. The victory marked a new UMass Dartmouth program record, as the Corsairs won a program-record eighth straight and rose to 5-0 in LEC competition for the first time.
Since returning to the Corsair roster for her sophomore season, Brown is averaging 9.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game to lead UMass Dartmouth’s guards. She joins teammates Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) and Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) as Corsairs to earn LEC Player of the Week honors this season.
The Corsairs return to league play Wednesday after dropping a close 74-66 setback to No. 8-ranked Tufts on Monday. UMass Dartmouth will square off with UMass Boston for sole possession of the top spot in the LEC standings.
