How it Happened
Regis senior Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) led her team in scoring and rebounding, posting 18 and 12, respectively. For UMass Dartmouth, Kutil poured in a 25 points on 12 of 19 shooting in 33 minutes on the floor. Her teammate, Examond, posted her second double-double of the weekend doubleheader, scoring 23 and grabbing 14 boards.
Each side frequently drew contact in the first quarter, as the two squads combined for 14 total free-throw attempts in the opening 10 minutes of play. Regis freshman Nikki Bitinaitis (Cromwell, Conn.) banked in a deep jumper from the perimeter to beat the first buzzer of the contest, tying things up at 17.
After Corsair sophomore Soraya Leon (Taunton, Mass.) had her three-pointer matched by her counterpart Melissa Rogers (Billerica, Mass.) to open the following stanza, the Corsairs netted 12 unanswered to extend their lead, 32-20. Back-to-back layups by forward Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) padded the Corsairs' 10-of-15 (66.7%) shooting in the second quarter, giving the hosts a 14-point cushion heading into the break.
UMass Dartmouth kept the offensive pressure on to begin the third quarter, inflating its margin to 53-30, after an Examond block translated into a fastbreak layup for Houlihan off the feed from sophomore Ashley Brown (Fairhaven, Mass.).
The Corsairs shot at a 57.1% clip in the final quarter, while restricting the Pride to just 33.3% shooting from the floor to seal the win.
