BRISTOL, RI-Host Roger Williams grabbed the lead late in the first half and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team, 50-38, in a non-conference game at the Campus Recreation Center Thursday evening.
The Hawks, who led at halftime, 23-21, outscored UMass Dartmouth in the second half, 27-17. The Corsairs led early, taking a 19-13 advantage with seven minutes remaining in the first half on a lay-up by senior forward Kaylin Nelson (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Salve Regina). RWU outscored UMD, 10-2, in the remained of the the first half, and took a 23-21 halftime lead on a three-pointer by Kate Malenczak with 16 sedonds left in the half.
Nelson led the Corsairs with 13 points, but she was the only UMD player in double figures. Alexandra Lanieri had 15 for the Hawks, Elizabeth Kitzi added 13 and Ryan Weekes had 10. Junior forward Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA/Barnstable HS) grabbed 12 rebounds for UMass Dartmouth, but Lanieri hd 13 and Weekes 12 for RWU as the Hawks out rebounded the Corsairs, 61-41. Roger Williams made 32.8 per cent of their shots from the field, while UMD made just 19.7 per cent.
"A cold shooting night led to our demise," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis. "We shot poorly, and we simply could not score. We will look to regroup fopr Saturday."
The Corsairs dropped to 5-9 with the defeat, while the Hawks improved to 5-8 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Keene State in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday.
