WESTFIELD, MA-Junior forward Tiffany Richard ((Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg HS) and senior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) scored first half goals and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) recorded her first shutout of the season as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team blanked host Westfield State, 2-0, in the Little East Conference opener for both teams at Alumni Field Saturday.
Richard put the Corsairs ahead, 1-0, when she converted a pass from Allan 11 minutes and 30 seconds into the match. Allan made it 2-0, scoring at 30:14. Senior midfielder Jenna Miedzionoski (Beverly, MA/Hamilton-Wenham HS) and senior defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) drew assists on the play.
"We are happy to move forward with our first conference win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "I would have liked to see a bit more out of my team, but we will use many of today's game moments as an opportunity to improve within the week ahead."
UMass Dartmouth out shot WSU, 15-3. O'Brien wasn't credited with making any saves in earning the shutout, while Khrystyna Mitchell made six saves for Westfield State.
The Corsairs improved to 2-1 with the victory, while the Owls fell to 1-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Endicott Wednesday.
