FRAMINGHAM, MA-Freshman forward Cory Connolly (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury HS) scored twice and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) earned the shutout as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team blanked host Framingham State, 3-0, in a Little East Conference match at the Rams' campus field on Saturday.
Connolly put the Corsairs ahead, 1-0, when she scored an unassisted goal from a scramble in front of the net in the first half.
Senior defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) converted a pass from junior defender Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown HS) off a penalty corner in the second half to make it 2-0, and Connolly made it 3-0 when she scored unassisted after picking up a rebound in the circle.
"We're glad to start off the season in a good position within the conference," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We are still putting some pieces together, and I look forward to seeing us really start to click. We took advantage of our corner opportunities, and we were quite strong defensively. (Senior midfielder) Jenna (Miedzionoski, Beverly, MA/Hamilton-Wenham HS) and (junior defender) Tory (Dolce, Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown HS) had strong games in the backfield and allowed us to avoid dangerous situations within the red zone."
The Corsairs outshot FSU, 20-3. O'Brien made three saves for UMD, while Sarah Ryan made 14 for the Rams.
UMD improved to 3-2 and 2-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Framingham State fell to 3-1 and 1-1 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Tufts Wednesday.
